Bulls continue finals fight after downing the Roar
Macarthur Bulls have moved to within a point of the top six after a dominant 5-1 win over Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium. It was the Roar who opened the scoring first through a wonderful Asumah Abubakar strike from range 28 minutes into the contest, however from there, it was all the Bulls. A hattrick of goals to winger Marin Jakoliš, along with finishes from Jake Hollman and Harrison Sawyer saw the Bulls ease past their opponents and now look ahead to a crucial trip to the Central Coast Mariners next weekend.
Wanderers extend unbeaten run on the road against Black Knights
Western Sydney Wanderers have extended their unbeaten run to eight matches after a tense 1-1 draw with league leaders Auckland FC, in front of more than 18,000 fans at GO Media Stadium on Saturday evening. In what was a showdown between first and fourth place, with neither able to find a breakthrough until Felipe Gallegos capitalised on an error at the back to send Auckland in front on the stroke of halftime. Desperate to leave New Zealand with points, Wanderers flew out of the gates in the second half and found an equaliser just six minutes into play thanks to an exquisite Nicolas Milanovic effort. From here, neither side could find the game winning goal, leaving Auckland now just five points clear in first place.
City defeat Mariners to keep Premier’s Plate hopes alive
Melbourne City moved to within six points of league leaders Auckland FC after a crucial 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners at AAMI Park on Saturday afternoon. Starting fast, City found what would prove to be the match winning goal just 17 minutes into the contest through 17-year-old star of the future, Medin Memeti who has now notched four goals this Isuzu UTE A-League Men season. With City in front at the break, the defending champions pushed to find an equalizer but were unable to get past a stoic City defence whose efforts sealed the win ahead of welcoming Brisbane Roar this Friday night.
Western stay on Auckland’s heels with big win at home
Western United has remained hot on Auckland FC’s heels in the pursuit of the Premier’s Plate, after defeating Perth Glory 3-1 at Ironbark Fields on Saturday evening. The home side started strongly, finding the back of the net just three minutes into play thanks to Rhys Bosinovski, which ultimately sent John Aloisi’s men to the break in front. Glory managed to draw level 10 minutes into the second half thanks to a stunning finish from youngster Jaylan Pearman, however, that was short lived after a Taras Gormulka own goal allowed Western to retake the lead 10 minutes later. Substitute Ramy Najjarine then sealed the win four minutes from time, leaving Western just five points off first place with four matches remaining.
Jets finals hopes take a tumble at home
Newcastle Jets’ hopes of making a late charge into the top six took a tumble on Sunday afternoon after a 2-1 defeat to Wellington Phoenix at McDonald Jones Stadium. Needing three points to stay deep in the hunt, the Jets found themselves down by two goals at halftime after finishes to Kosta Barbarouses and Kazuki Nagasawa for the Phoenix in the opening 45 minutes. Rob Stanton’s men were handed a lifeline with 25 minutes remaining after an own goal from Phoenix keeper Josh Oluwayemi however from there, it was Oluwayemi who stood tall to deny the home side, which included a miraculous last minute save, to send the Phoenix back home with all three points. With four matches to play, the Jets now sit seven points off finals football.
